The recently concluded “Young Researchers for a Plastic Free Baltic Sea Region” workshop, organised by Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and the Baltic University Program (BUP) was a unique mix of knowledge exchange, networking and fun. The three-day event brought together around 30 master’s and PhD students at BUP participating universities and other universities in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) students as well as experts in circularity, environmental management, policies and plastic pollution.

Dr. Jelena Barbir, from HAW Hamburg introduced the Bio4Circularity (B4C) Network in detail. We also saw attendance from B4C premium members – Pavlo Lyshtva, from Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) highlighted the importance of impact assessments in ensuring effectiveness and accountability, while Kristīne Meile from Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry explored the concept of ‘bio’ plastics in detail, from renewable feedstocks to end-of-life strategies.

There were poster presentations and networking opportunities, thereby facilitating the sharing and exchange of diverse perspectives. The event also had several opportunities for informal interactions, such as a boat ride through Hamburg Harbour and a farewell dinner, where participants shared their reflections.
